How to phase out the old system?

Thursday, Oct 16th 11:30 and 14:30

As the emergence of a truly circular economy requires the old system to transform entirely, we need to figure out which elements need to change and which need to disappear completely and then learn how to manage that transition. In this practical workshop, each participant will create a phase-out plan for one element of the old system and together we'll figure out how to overcome the challenges we're likely to meet.

Workshop leader: Martin A. Noorkõiv

Martin A. Noorkõiv is a partner at Strateon Social Impact Consulting and a seasoned social change consultant. With +15 years of experience in civil society, academic leadership and strategic governance.

How to shift people's habits? Mapping the situation to build a plan

Thursday, Oct 16th 11:30 ENG and 14:30 EST

In this workshop, we’ll explore some practical tools for designing change programs based on social practices. We’ll try out how to reframe tricky behaviors using the “language” of social practices, look at what kind of resources your target group has for making changes, and figure out what strategic options that gives you. That becomes the foundation for your habit-change plan. To make it more useful, we’ll ask everyone to bring a practical, work-related challenge—ideally something tied to sustainability—that we can use for exercises during the workshop.

Workshop leaders: Triin Vihalemm, Margit Keller

Triin Vihalemm is Professor of Communication Research at the University of Tartu. Her work includes strategic communication, designing social change programmes and researching social change processes. A significant part of her over hundred scientific articles and book chapters deal with transition processes in society.

Margit Keller, PhD, an Associate Professor of Social Communication at the University of Tartu has been teaching students and researching possibilities of reshaping people’s everday habits to catalyze social change for over 25 years. Currently she is coordinating a team of University of Tartu and Taltech researchers to look into the beauty and pain of Just Transition of Ida-Virumaa (North-East Estonia, where the oil shale mining and energy production of Estonia is located).

From vision to action - how to make reuse systems mainstream?

Thursday, Oct 16th 11:30 and 14:30

Today in the EU, Member States and businesses are now legally required to drastically reduce packaging waste. With projections showing a 10% increase in packaging by 2030, the task feels overwhelming - especially in the fast-growing takeaway sector. Yet, the shift is already underway. Pioneering NGOs, cities and businesses are proving it is possible to move beyond single-use, shaping a European reuse blueprint with concrete data and insights from several city projects across Europe.

This workshop is targeting aspiring changemakers who want to move from vision to action. How to bring life to impactful reuse solutions? How to scale pilots into city-wide or even national systems? What stakeholders do you need to involve and how to bring them onboard? Join us to learn, exchange, and get practical tools to accelerate reuse.

Workshop leader: Nathan Dufour

Nathan Dufour is a Reuse Systems Manager at Zero Waste Europe (ZWE). European coordinator of the ReuSe Vanguard Project (RSVP) since 2021, Nathan has been leading ZWE's pioneering work to create the conditions for mainstreaming the adoption and harmonisation of packaging systems for reuse across Europe, with a special focus on cities.

Opening Symbiosis – Circular Economy Cooperation between Organizations

Thursday, Oct 16th 11:30 EST and 14:30 ENG

In this workshop we focus on symbiotic cooperation between enterprises and organizations, where resources are used together, while communicating and sharing openly.

We create space for the start of new cooperation ideas, where the focus is set on maximum use of resources and rethinking traditional barriers. In the workshop, we generate ideas, work through different scenarios and improve each other's thoughts to support networking and systems thinking, which are important factors for the success of industrial symbiosis. Practical exercises help to overcome conventional understandings of competition and resource ownership.

By the end of the workshop, each participant will be able to find systemic opportunities in industrial symbiosis and compose potential cooperation ideas into a project.

Workshop leaders: Kädi Ristkok ja Carolin Aas

Kädi Ristkok is the CEO of the Estonian Cleantech Association and previously headed the Climate Policy Department of the Ministry of the Environment.
